Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots

1998 Arnoux Robert Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots

Purer and denser nose than the 98 Corvées Pagets, higher toned too. The palate is fresh and is one of those crescendo wines that builds with intensity. Still primary but very, very long and understated – I’m quite impressed by this.

A wine that followed the ’96 Drouhin Musigny and despite that, a very good showing. The colour is medium red, halfway between between cherry and ruby. The nose eventually becomes a lovely blend of sweet red and black fruit following ~40 minutes of so-so performance. Nicely concentrated and complex fruit of interesting and mouthwatering expression. The acidity is good and the tannins are a little grainy – but none of the astringency of some ’98’s. The finish is mouthwatering and quite long too. Very nice wine without a doubt.

1998 Potel Nicolas Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots

Signs of seepage under the capsule, but nothing untoward in the way the wine presented itself. Deep cherry red. The nose starts with tons of black cherry depth, but it’s primary and there’s not much else, perhaps a little high toned red fruit and mint – okay perhaps there is more… Not much fat but super concentration. The tannin is well behaved – no astringency – and good acidity. With food there seems a bit of a gap in the mid-palate, otherwise you don’t notice. Medium, medium-plus length. I enjoyed this wine plenty.

Again very deep colour. More oak on the nose than any of the previous wines. Still, there is smooth cherry pie behind this oak. Lots of volume in the mouth, and lots of tannin to – but quite silky. Nice acidity and very long.

1998 Hudelot-Noellat Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots

Deep ruby colour, more mature looking than anticipated. Some high toast oak though not overpowering, behind it there is cherry, ‘mixed spice’ and coffee. In the mouth, very smooth though oaky. Good acidity and still some tannin, though quite refined. There is cherry fruit and a particularly long vanilla crème finish. Provided over the next 5+ years it puts on a bit more weight in the mid-palate, this will be exceptionally good.
