2009 Verget Puligny-Montrachet Champs Gains

By billn on November 05, 2011

This has a forward nose with a few herbs and decent, high-toned fruit. There’s plenty of flavour and a really good intensity too. I’d just like a little more acidity to provide focus, without this it’s a bit too expensive – both 2008 and 2010 villages will offer more value.

1998 Verget Chablis Bougros

Medium golden colour. The nose showcases high tones over a deeper, ripe base. Very long in a brûlée way. Ripe with a nicely shaped palate, seems to have some age and maturity but no rush. Bought for a song in a sale, but tested too late to re-stock. This was a really lovely.

1996 Verget Chablis Montée de la Tonnerre

Medium toast oak and a hint of something green on the nose – lime I think, gradually becomes buttery and honied. The palate is powerful and rich, showing very good acidity, just a little butter and very long. Despite just a trace of bitterness on the finish I think this is excellent wine, though the oak blurs the ‘sense of place’ for me.
