Gros A-F

2007 Gros A-F Vosne-Romanée Les Maizières

Dark red fruit aromas and a little spice. Very nice ripe fruit dimension – lovely villages – though there’s a dark aspect from the barrels. Good acidity and length.

The nose is more red fruit ‘driven’ than the 07, though black fruit is still in the mix. A little more fat, but more oak flavour too. Good width and a nice, mouth-watering finish.

High-toned aromas. Wide on the palate and showing very nice fruit. Good mid-palate dimension too. Oak texture and some flavour too on the finish, but still a very nice wine.

A floral top note and sweet red fruit – subtle rather than forceful. In the mouth the fruit is wonderful and the ample tannin straddles the border between silk and velvet. There’s plenty of barrel flavour too, but it can’t obscure the quality of everything around it. Super length and very fine.

2005 Gros A-F Vosne-Romanée Clos de la Fontaine

The cork seems surprisingly ’spongy’ and pliable. Medium-plus colour. The nose is dark, spicy and shows a black oak toast and tar – eventually faint red fruits diluted by cream and faint ginger. In your mouth there’s a little fat and some silky texture – the tannin is quite fine. The mid-palate runs into quite a long finish – plenty of bitter-chocolate effect from the oak but some extra creamy fruit dimension too. This wine has plenty of dark oak character today but there’s more than enough density and material to balance – and it will fade with time, even in the glass, slowly there are redder fruits appearing. I’m not the biggest oak fan, but this is nicely presented and has plenty of ‘Vosne’ personality. I look forward following it’s evolution over the next 10+ years. My en-primeur price was a reasonable 35 Swiss francs.

1997 Gros A-F Richebourg

The nose shows some high tones, faint spice and interesting but understated fruit. The palate seems less ripe than some but frankly has tons of complexity and dimension – this will need at least 10 years but might be worth an outside bet.
