Medium-plus ruby-red. The nose starts deep and wide – still primary – slowly providing a soft, savoury bacon-fat background. In the mouth this is intense, wide and mouth-filling. There is still plenty of tannin, faintly astringent and with a bitter chocolate edge that adds a little cream before going very long in the finish. There is a ton of structure here but it’s very well matched by the extract. Excellent, and wait a minute – hmm – I can still buy this cheaper than some ‘mid-range’ 2005 premiers…!

Medium-plus ruby-red. The nose is wide with a black tinge to the fruit and the beginings of a savoury note at its base – the fruit slowly comes more to the fore, becoming sweeter and fresher. In the mouth the fruit is also rather black and has a really nice purity on the mid-palate. This fruit is currently a little over-shadowed by the grainy, slightly astringent and certainly a little rustic tannin – which I feel could be a little riper. Very good persistence for a village. In terms of the complete package, this is a relative bargain in this vintage – still very young.

Deep ruby core, still just a hint of cherry at the rim. The nose is dominated by wood when first opened, taking around 30 minutes to start showing coffee and caramel tones. Another hour shows roasting red fruits and gradually higher tones. The palate has first-class texture, acidity that lingers and super length that has a touch of creamy black cherry about it. Not the outright density of the very best, but it’s borne in a very impressive way. Today still far too much wood obscuring its ‘Volnay-ness’ – should be coming round in another 10 years or so.

Drank directly after Bertagna’s Charlemagne, which frankly towered above this Perrières! Pale yellow. The nose is rather tight, giving up a little fresh bread and very faintly minty high-toned fruit. Medium intensity but with a profile that expands into a good finish.. It’s very clean, with lovely acidity, your mouth subtly waters for at least a minute after swallowing. A very lovely wine – in isolation.

The colour is not fading a jot. The nose has a wide layer of high-toned fruit that covers a few bready notes and a tight core of fruit that bodes well for the future. The fruit is a little riper and plumper than the 2001 but the tannins are a little less fine. This is super wine and has the same personality as the 2001, but it’s dressed in jeans whereas the 2001 is dressed for dinner. The nose just grows and grows so decant if you’re going to drink now.

Golden colour. The nose has faint butterscotch and an aged, nutty, slightly aniseed complexion. With a little swirling more primary citrussy fruit is released. The palate is nicely put together with good acidity and shows a good, dense, mid-palate. The finish has above average length and majors on the hazelnut aspects. I have to say that this is not my favourite profile and whilst the nuttiness is a characteristic of a mature Meursault, this seems a little overdone – especially for a 99 – I suspect this is prematurely aged. Somehow the bottle was still finished with ease…

Medium-plus colour, edging towards ruby. The nose is a mix of red and black and shows some raisined fruit. Wow, quite some elegance on the palate, it’s full, just a little fat with fresh, black-shaded fruit and very well-mannered tannins. Blind I’d probably guess this to be a well above average NSG. The medium finish takes away none of the refinement – very fine villages and not even vaguely rustic. I’ll probably bag some halves – very handy.

Lufthansa first class! Medium/medium-plus colour. A little spice and subdued red raspberry fruit coated with subtle vanilla. Nice texture, medium concentration, good acidity and medium plus well-grained tannins. Good length on the slightly sweet fruit, a little banana too. I’d prefer the fruit to be a bit more concentrated but this is a nice drink at 35,000 feet and in this environment surprisingly refined – but couldn’t I have expected a 1er or Grand Cru in first class? , -)

1999 Bouchard Père et Fils Monthelie

This is a relatively new vineyard for BP&F which was purchased in 1996 from the Domaine Ropiteau. Medium red colour. Understated nose is higher toned. Less fat perhaps then the previous wine but pure medium intensity fruit. Tannins are well represented, but don’t get out of hand. I’d leave this for 2 or 3 years, I think it should be almost good.
