Boisset Jean-Claude

2002 Boisset Jean-Claude Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes

From Gregory’s first vintage… Heavily scented, this seems quite mature for the vintage – though not the colour. Full in the mouth, plenty of tannin and good long flavours. Still a baby!

A very pretty nose of soft, smooth red/black fruit. In the mouth there’s a width of very pretty fruit with decent mid-palate dimension. Long – lingering on perfect, mouth-watering acidity. Super.

Medium, medium-plus colour. The nose is less forward that the Borniques. Sweeter, well packaged flavours, still decently structured. Excellent length, this is a very pretty wine that will be a nicer drink today than the Borniques – 5+ years ahead I expect the Borniques will pull ahead.

The vines are ~50 years old, everything has been changed in the last 5 years – even the training from Guyon to Cordon Royat – zero herbicides and grass allowed to grow in the rows. Freshly opened the nose is a little unfocused; slowly it relaxes, opening to become creamier without ever getting into top gear. The palate is about understated elegance coupled to excellent length. Despite that, it’s a very well muscled wine below the perfectly tailored presentation. Super, but not over-achieving within the vintage to the same extent as the 2004 did.

From 50 year-old vines, no new oak for the elevage. High tones, fruit, meat and spice. Serious concentration of creamy fruit – black-shaded – this is just exquisitely presented as it ever-widens on the mid-palate. Plenty of structure, another wine without fat or padding. Pure wine, should be very long lived – superb.
