Saint-Romain

2009 Mischief and Mayhem Saint-Romain

By billn on November 17, 2011

Elevage was 50% in stainless-steel and 50% 2 year-old barrels. Bottled in September 2010. A whiff of toast and perhaps a reductive note too – but below is a nice mineral impression which adds ripe lemon if you swirl. This is lithe, fresh and nicely intense – another St.Romain winner from this producer – this will be a lovely summer wine, but certainly more than a quaffer.

A core of yellow fruit with some overall freshness. There’s a good impression of nicely round and flavours that sit well with the acidity. The core is driven by ripe fruit that enjoys a sweet/sour balance with the acidity. Maybe it’s best in its youth(?) but it is a very lovely glass today.

I remember this being very tasty from barrel last year. Forward, stony aromas. This has a lovely density and richness that is well balanced by the acidity – bravo, still lovely.

No oak – all elevage in stainless steel – bottled in July 2008. A soaring, high-toned nose that’s faintly estery but high-toned and engaging. In the mouth there’s much more impact than expected; good density and concentration and a lovely citrus acidity that aids the length. Slowly it develops a creamy flavour. Taught and tasty – I thought this lovely.

2004 Bichot Albert Saint-Romain

Négociant wine. Pale yellow. High-toned nose that seems a little thick in the middle – no new oak used here. The palate is fresh and opens out very nicely. This wine has good density and none of the ‘raised’ acidity that is common from this appellation. A very good St.Romain.

2002 Chartron & Trebuchet Saint-Romain

Medium yellow colour. High-toned, shades of spearmint and a fainter honeyed depth. The palate has bracing acidity – only just sufficient buffering fruit extract to bring into balance. Medium finishing. This is a very clean an crisp wine, but comes close to losing balance due to the forward acidity, given that (with time) the fruit is only going the wane I would look to drink these by the end of next summer.
