2005 Berthaut Fixin Les Crais

By billn on June 02, 2011

Medium-plus red, perhaps starting to lose some of the colour of youth. The nose is lovely; invitingly deep, dark fruit with a hint of mineral. Mouthfilling, with excellent acidity and still slightly sticky but smooth tannin. There’s plenty of flavour here and a mineral length too. Drinking very well right now – I’m tempted to try some of the other cuvées. Lovely.

Dark colour. Concentrated red berry – so much so it’s like a sauce reduction. Clinical, clean lines – very linear but silken. Really good intensity and even an impression of flavour! Despite the note it tasted pretty good. Plenty more left for experimenting with the vintage over the next decade and a half!

2005 Bize Simon Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Bourgeots

Slight confiture, but very appealing and forward red fruit aromas. Full, ripe fruit dovetails with plenty of balanced, ripe tannin. Bravo – very nice indeed and not obviously tight.

2005 Fichet Jean-Philippe Meursault

I tighter core of riper fruit. This has that typical 2005 richness, but I find the balancing acidity doing a better job than in the 2006 and indeed many from 2005. The mid-palate flavours continue to grow. I think this could be really very good but it will need more time than most.

2005 Ardhuy Beaune Petite Clos du Teurons Blanc

By billn on June 30, 2010

There’s already a hint of gold here. The nose shows a little baked pineapple. Very silky though it has the much more standard ‘fat’ of white Beaune than either the 08 or 09. A good burst of flavour in the mid-palate.

2005 Dubreuil-Fontaine Volnay

This is a very good value wine, not only is it well priced for a villages wine, as we now know it also contains a significant amount of 1er cru grapes from Carelle Sous Chapelle, Les Brouillards and Les Lurets. Double decanted an hour before pouring. Aromatically this is a little mute but there are fresh, high-tones of dark red fruits and fainter, high-toned floral aromas – very fine fruit – and the empty glass smells of rose petals. The last vestiges of fat are melting as the acidity starts to come to the fore – very smooth before a hint of tannin in the back-end. Certainly there’s a really nice depth of fruit with a decent length and a residual hint of sweetness, but here’s a tight wine. With the merest hint of a wince, this is drinkable today, but realistically it is already set for a 10 year-plus sleep – I think I’m lucky that I didn’t meet it earlier – otherwise I might have bought 2 cases!

2005 Maillard Père et Fils Beaune

Medium-plus colour. The nose starts with sweet, toasty caramel oak and some associated savoury notes – over time it has a more floral, violets dimension. Sweet fruit with glinting acidity – it’s a nice balance – the tannin of the backbone has depth but is fine and ripe. Relatively linear in the mid-palate – I’m not sure if that’s because it’s tight or because I just finished a Griottes! Well-made and tasty wine.

2005 Rion Daniel Nuits St.Georges Les Grandes Vignes

Medium, medium-plus young colour. Some oak, but also very pretty fruit with a faintly spicy width. Good concentration, the intensity builds aided by super acidity and equally super mouth-watering length. Very good.

2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Chambolle-Musigny

A négoce wine. Medium-plus cherry-red colour. The nose has decent width but better depth, but note that it has an appreciable oak base. In the mouth the concentration is almost good and there is plenty of tannin though it seems more wood than grape-driven. The length is good, but despite it being a decent enough and very drinkable effort, indeed a wine you may be happy to have in your cellar in 10 years time, I see this as well behind the better village cuvées from the 2005 vintage.
