2007 Pavillon Beaune Les Epenottes

By billn on February 02, 2012

Medium, medium-plus colour. This has a nose that starts with quite a bit of vanilla – it’s also reflected in the early flavours – not my favourite but it just about avoids excess; behind is a raspberry coulee, and very nice that is! In the mouth this has the weight of a 1er cru Epenottes and a good ripe aspect to the fruit which lingers on an understated but fine line of acidity. If told this was a 1er cru from Beaune I don’t expect you’d quibble – though you might reject the barrel vanilla. Over 2-3 hours the unneccessary vanilla make-up fades significantly from both the aromas and flavours but underneath is a wine of excellent value.

More spice and herbs on the nose. Higher-toned flavours, dark fruit brings lots of interest – a lovely burst of flavour in the mid-palate that follows the acidity into the finish.

A tight core of fruit, faint SO2. Ripe but not fat, good acidity and the impression of the mid-palate filling out. A quite savoury impression in the finish. Pretty mineral for a villages Meursault.

Deep and wide aromas of red/black cherry mixed with a little cream. A little more tannin and and dark fruit (versus the Bichot Savigny) in the mid-palate. Good flavour and good length.

The nose is a little reticent, just deep understated fruit. In the mouth, smooth fruit amply covers the structure, but as the fruit slowly fades the structure slowly becomes more visible. Interesting wine and worth putting to one side to round out.

From 8 separate, owned parcels, only grapes from the west side of Meursault. Wide on the nose with decent fruit. Penetrates the palate with nice concentration and super intensity for a villages. A nice finish too.

Quite deep colour. The nose is dense and a little tight – it needs a few minutes in the glass before showing its fruit. A soft and sweet entry; the flavours expand quickly across the mid-palate – lots of balance here. There ares plenty of tannins, but they melt well in the finish. This is a very tasty and fun wine.

Less than 2 weeks in bottle. A high-toned nose of quite understated depth. After the subdued nose the palate impresses with its volume and its forward presentation. There is good width and a nice (small) extra dimension on the mid-palate before the good acidity takes you into the reasonable finish. Quite nice and should only get better as it recovers from bottling.
