Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune

2005 Naudin-Ferrand Henri Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune

The label says ‘Orchis Mascula’ – not sure if that’s just a bit of decoration, or the name of the cuvée. Dark, slightly spicy aromas, hints of sweet smoke – almost certainly some stems – approaching a floral perfume. A nice width of flavour, then the acidity comes to the fore – but no problem – a hint of tannin too as you head into the finish. An hour later and it’s rounder, better balanced and quite tasty with a clear strawberry flavour. Good wine – a second bottle in the cellar should be quite interesting with a few more years…

Already bottled way back in August – only 12 months elevages with about one-third new oak. There’s a hint of oak wrapped up in a little reduction. Slowly opens but never fully showed its potential while I was shortly with the glass.

A good core of fairly deep red fruit aromas – eventually a clear raspberry note. There is a mirrored core of red fruit on the palate too that is coupled to excellent acidity and just a hint of tannic background. Fresh and tasty.

Very nice colour. The nose becomes more floral. Fruit is ripe and the acidity quite forward – but the flavour really holds and delivers a very strong impression. Slowly rounds in the glass – I’d say bury in your cellar for 10 years then surprise people blind!

Medium yellow. Nose of yeasty, soft and malic, green apple. The palate is certainly fresh, accentuated by somewhat unripe if reasonably concentrated fruit. Not particularly long but drinks reasonably well chilled. Don’t wait, for drinking now in the hot garden.
