2003 Giroud Camille Bourgogne Pinot Noir

By on July 31, 2007 #asides

Now coming into the last bottles of this case – only 4 remain. Medium, medium-plus cherry red. The nose is quite 2003 in style yet shows beautifully delineated red and blue fruits and more unusually for 2003 there are violets too over a creamy base – so far it’s better than many grand crus from this vintage. The palate is less fine, but it’s sweet, medium intensity and quite well mannered. The fruit has really good density – more so than most bourgognes – chapeau. Shame that so few remain in the cellar – a real sniffer’s wine – and you don’t get to say that very often with a bourgogne!

2003 Bouchard Père et Fils Bourgogne Pinot Noir La Vignée

By on October 31, 2006 #asides

Nice deep colour – already quite ruby-red at the core – looks good the glass. The aromatics are relatively muted, a little earth and faint underbrush, only occasional glimpses of nice red fruit.
The palate is soft with good apparent concentration, enough acidity and tannins that only show themselves with a little grain as you move into the finish. At its price-point this is a very successful wine, I was only missing a little ‘character’.

2003 Ambroise Bertrand Bourgogne Blanc

By on October 31, 2006 #asides

Medium yellow. The nose is quite reticent; sweet and creamy with well-absorbed wood and an almost sherbet top note. The palate is reminiscent of a 2004 with tight acidity that’s hardly covered by the extract. The finish is a little rough, but given that I don’t have an idea of the price I would say (overall) not bad, maybe even almost good if it’s cheap enough!

2003 Bouchard Père et Fils Bourgogne Pinot Noir

By on October 31, 2005 #asides

Medium-plus cherry-red. Obviously about 03 on the nose, with deep liqueur cherry. Nice mouthfeel – plenty of velvety tannin, long finishing for a bourgogne with a fruit-colour that just hints toward black – high-toned mid-palate, reasonable freshness too. Recommended.

2003 Dugat-Py Bernard Bourgogne

By on October 31, 2005 #asides

Medium-plus cherry-red. The nose reminds of walking into a barrel cellar, very young red fruit, tinged with black and mixed with a strong vanilla component. Concentrated to a level way above regional wine, good texture and good enough acidity. Roughly medium-length creamy fruit – if it was any longer you might guess 1er cru. Bravo!

2003 Giroud Camille Bourgogne Pinot Noir

A recurring bottle over the summer, ~6 so-far, this wine has been very consistent. Sweet, stewing cherries on the nose with that characteristic hint of 2003 in the background. Fresh, with sweetness coming from the ripe fruit and a little burst on the mid-palate. Grainy but fun tannin – continues to shine at this price-point.

2003 Girardin Vincent Bourgogne Emotion de Terroirs

By on October 31, 2005 #asides

Medium-plus cherry red. The nose starts quite 2003 in style, but gradually becomes a little more high/toned with violets. Good density and concentration. The tannins retain a little fur, the fruit being diffuse but mainly red. The acidity is just enough. Another impressive 03 bourgogne, even if the last glass seems a little tiring to drink. Poorer value vs the Bouchard, Giroud and Chanson.

2003 Chanson Père et Fils Le Bourgogne

By on October 31, 2005 #asides

Medium-plus cherry-red. The nose is very 2003, forward red and black cherry liqueur. Well concentrated, chocolatey, shaded to black fruit, slightly drying, but not too grainy tannin with good sweetness. Another highly recommended 2003 bourgogne. I’ve bought a few more for the summer months to come!

2003 Bertagna Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Les Dames Huguettes

By on June 30, 2005 #asides

Big heavy bottle exuding quality – hope the wine’s a match – particularly as at €14 it’s not cheap for a bourgogne. Medium-plus colour. The nose whilst shouting 2003 has an extra dimension – it’s close to what you expect from a barrel sample with very forward sweet, ripe red fruit. The palate is also reminiscent of a barrel sample, showing good freshness, a hint of sweetness and a mouthwatering finish of surprising depth. Really first-class bourgogne. Within the context of appellations this is the pinnacle of 2003 red burgundy. There’s now a case in cellar.
