2001 Méo-Camuzet Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Clos St. Philibert

What a great wine both this and the 2000 have been – this is my last bottle and all have performed well. Medium-plus golden, the nose has hints of butterscotch and the faintest whiff of oxidation – but in an interesting rather than overt way. The palate remains smooth though there’s a suggestion that the acidity is starting to take hold, but for now it just helps to push the finish a little longer and with a very understated mouth-watering edge. This wine is still giving plenty – for sure it’s completely mature, but whilst I think it might last another few years, if you have some, I’m pretty sure that the experience won’t improve. Well-done Hautes Côtes de Nuits Blanc!

2001 Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc

Medium-plus yellow colour. The nose had plenty of struck match and savoury elements – even intruding on the (quite) big flavours. Initially seemed a little too fat. I decanted and returned after 3 hours. Smooth interesting and fruit driven aromas, the struck match is gone and the balance is better – or maybe my palate is better! It’s a concentrated and ripe impression – high quality.

Like chalk and cheese these two wines. The 2000 has a quite young, medium yellow colour whereas the 2001 is much more golden. Despite the colours, the 2000 is the more toasty and faintly madirised, the 2001 is aromatically much more like a classic white burgundy. The 2000 needs time in the glass as it starts also with madirised flavours – but they all-but disappear with 1 hour’s aeration, leaving some sweetness, good concentration and balance. The 2001 is very balanced but much more austere in the mid-palate and finish – just needs a little more sweetness for ’solo’ drinking, however, it fits really well with food. Overall, decent value wines that I occasionally see at reasonable prices on restaurant lists.

2001 Barthod Ghislaine Bourgogne

Medium colour. A soft red fruit nose with a faint cedar top note, slowly develops more density to the red core and eventually a little redcurrant. Well textured with plenty of forward fruit and again a faint edge of cedar – but at this level it’s additive – I do though find the overall profile slightly jammy. A simple but balanced and quite tasty luncheon bourgogne that never quite gets the pulse increasing.

2001 La Buxynoise Montagny 1er Cru

Eleve en fûts de chêne in bold type on the label. Medium yellow colour. A subtle and quite sophisticated nose that has very faint brioche and very nice yellow-skinned citrus fruit. In the mouth it’s round and soft but with super acidity that leaves the flavour lingering. Great value, I could drink this all summer long, alfresco…

2001 Bachelet Denis Bourgogne Rouge

Medium cherry-red. The nose is wide, faintly funky and softly sweet and red. The palate is relatively soft with a red fruit complexion but initially simple with slightly shrill acidity. Aeration bit-by-bit subdues the acidity and you are left with a soft and friendly wine that shows little tannin and a reasonable length. Given a similar performance on day two (the bottle spent the night in the fridge) it seems more of a temperature effect – quite tart cold, smoother at room temperature. Easy drinking.

2001 Coche-Dury Bourgogne Aligote

Medium yellow. The nose is deep with a little width. The fruit impression is of a rather rubbery banana effect – actually better than it sounds. The palate has some density, very good acidity and (once more) the banana/rubber theme – this time with the rubber in the ascendancy. Interesting to drink on it’s own but a little wearing, however, this wine really complimented a wide range of dishes – truly a food-loving wine. Interesting and very good value at €20 in a restaurant (Ma Cuisine).

2001 Jadot Louis Bourgogne Blanc

Medium yellow. The nose starts with a dominating oak note, however, about 30 minutes from opening and things are much more refined – nicely deep fruit with a mineral core – simple but well done. Obviously lacks the concentration of a higher appellation wine, but what I particularly like is that the wine opens in the mouth with just an edge of cream going into the finish. It really does need about thirty minutes of air to balance out, but will be lovely summer wine.

2001 Frèrebeau Jacob Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune

Medium yellow. Nose of yeasty, soft and malic, green apple. The palate is certainly fresh, accentuated by somewhat unripe if reasonably concentrated fruit. Not particularly long but drinks reasonably well chilled. Don’t wait, for drinking now in the hot garden.
