(Magnum) Pale yellow. The nose is unusual, lots of peardrops and just a little sickly to me. The palate, however, is has plenty of acidity that is not perfectly refined but there’s plenty of dimension and good length. A bit of a Curate’s Egg.

1997 Leroy (Maison) Bourgogne Blanc
Pale golden. The nose shows hints of grapefruit and a faint oxidative note – though certainly not oxidised – together with high-toned alcoholic notes. Some sweetness in the mouth, racy and lithe, quite linear. Good persistence and surprisingly little obvious ‘97 character. Despite showing very little overt fruit character this is a young wine. Interesting and no rush to drink.
1997 Guillemot-Michel Pierre et Marc Bourgogne Blanc
1997 Jadot Louis Bourgogne
Medium ruby-red. After a few young wines this comes with a real breath of interest, secondary, tertiary, a little volatility, and behind some baked raisin fruit. The acidity is almost good though shows slightly harsh in the finish. Apart from that harsh last flick from the acidity this has a nice texture, no tannin and an interesting depth to both the fruit and finish, unfortunately no mid-palate to speak of. Quite nice but drink-up time.
1997 Méo-Camuzet Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Clos St. Philibert
1997 Château Chorey-les-Beaune - Germain Bourgogne Rouge
Medium-plus ruby red colour. The nose shows not so much in the way of fruit and an unattractive yeasty note. In contrast the palate is fat with very sweet fruit and mouth watering acidity and fading tannins. For my taste this is a little too much like fruit-juice, but in context a seven year-old wine for only €12 so more than decent value.
1997 Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc
1997 Jadot Louis Bourgogne Chardonnay
A medium yellow. The nose starts with a blast of fruit but quickly becomes more subdued – waxy with pineapple – with time a hint of wet wool. Nice weight in the mouth, reasonably sweet, certainly simple with medium length. Nothing to really dislike about this wine unless it warms up in the glass, if this happens the overall effect is a bit flabby and lacking balance. Kept chilled this is a very nice wine and still seems quite young.
1997 Remoissenet Père et Fils Bourgogne Chardonnay
A bright lemon yellow. The nose betrays a hint of old oak plus a little higher toned citrus. Reasonably fat with a blend of citrus and pear fruit. Good acidity and a medium finish make this a very pleasant wine. At first I thought this wine could happily be left a couple more years – but gradually you start to get a little hazelnut and perhaps an oxidised note on the finish – so why wait drink this now – it’s pretty good.
