2005 Potinet-Ampeau Volnay Carelles Sous la Chapelle

By billn on October 03, 2011

Deep color. The nose starts with very little, but bit-by-bit opens with fruit that’s very 05; intense, certainly ripe but still pure, uncooked fruit – it’s very nice. Mouth-filling but without obvious puffery, just intense, clean and lithe muscle. Good finish – open and captivating. Yum.

2005 Voillot Joseph Volnay Les Brouillards

By billn on September 05, 2011

Medium colour. A kind of candied sweetness mixes with red fruit and eventually a beguiling floral aroma – lovely. This wine has thinned-out, plenty of acidity but intensity too and an impression of extract. Still very drinkable but not the gorgeously cushioned drinkability of its first few months in bottle. This remains a great Brouillards.

2005 Pavillon Pommard Les Rugiens

Aromas offer some authority while remaining rather understated. Fine, ripe tannin. The fresh-face of youth may have gone, but this is flavour-packed and not a bit tight. Super balance and a similar style diminuendo of finish to the 2006, but longer…

2005 Comte Armand Pommard Clos des Epeneaux

By billn on March 21, 2011

A much deeper colour. The nose offers density without ‘heft’. Wide, concentrated yet somehow balanced – post-swallowing there is a really intense finish. Quite open – I’m surprised – but a wine for the ages…

2005 Bize Simon Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Fourneaux

Deeper and darker, just a little tighter too. More mineral, more direct and more linear – also more intense. This is a wine of considerable power. Very, very good, but drink the Bourgeots in preference today.

2005 Liger-Belair Thibault Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées

By billn on July 31, 2010

Medium-plus colour. Deep, rich, dark red fruit aromas – almost cordial. Intense, quite some blocky extract. There’s a linear intensity through the centre of this wine – it doesn’t narrow or widen, it goes like a train. The flavour has some of the dark mineral flavour of the Jadots, it’s also very long. Today this is a little tight, austere and far from seamless but it is far from lacking material. Return in 10 years.

2005 Parent Beaune Les Epenottes

By billn on June 30, 2010

Relatively open and fine – this reminds me of the precision of 2008s – there is also a hint of earth. Full and round, just enough flavour though it’s very tight. Plenty of structure – built like a cathedral!

2005 Château Chorey-les-Beaune - Germain Beaune Vignes Franches

By billn on June 30, 2010

Medium, medium-plus colour. Perfumed! Super texture but clearly very tight. There is late developing intensity and eventually some good flavour too. Will be great!

2005 Château Chorey-les-Beaune - Germain Beaune Les Teurons

By billn on June 30, 2010

Medium, medium-plus colour. Wide with deep dark-red, fresh fruit. Again silky, then more velvet as the tannin builds. Perfect acidity and intensity though this also very tight.
