The colour is heading towards amber. Sweet fruit aromas, backed with a little volatile acidity. Energetic in the mouth, but still with quite some tannic astringency – I’d suggest waiting a couple of years 😉

1988 Giroud Camille Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes
Medium colour. The nose starts in that Italian (many years in barrel) botti vernacular, it really needs at least an hour for that to fade, below it builds a core of dried fruits, above is some faintly volatile floral notes. In the mouth there’s a cushioned, slightly padded level of tannin and a very interesting intensity of mature fruit flavours in the mid-plate. The finish is understated but long. Interesting rather than ‘great’, but very much enjoyed.
1988 Berthaut Fixin Les Arvelets
A deep, dusky and musky nose – in the short time we’re together the fruit slowly comes more to the fore. Very soft entry,
it’s wide and and interesting with plenty of dimension, power and is quite ripe. There’s a little more grain to the tannins
than the previous wines, but this is long and lovely – à point!

1988 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Perrières
A wide and deep nose, mainly of ripe fruit, just a little oak and some rounding, higher notes. The palate is quite linear, intense on the tongue and very, very complex as it leaves the mid-palate for the finish. The finish is understated, but very long. Not sexy, but not severe – very, very good, but don’t let’s discuss the price vs quality ratio…
1988 Arnoux Robert Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots
An aged colour of medium-plus browning amber. Not too much spice on the nose, but plenty of sous bois and turned earth. Unlike some of the younger vintages which are very, very concentrated, the wine puts in a very elegant performance. The tannins are resolved, the acidity is good and there is the silky texture that only a good Burgundy can deliver. A treat!
1988 Gros Michel Vosne-Romanée Clos des Réas
1988 Grivot Jean Nuits St.Georges Les Pruliers
Old style label. Garnet in shade. The nose is deep and still oaky with eventually some dried fruit as a higher register, but I have to say not all that attractive. This is still a big wine with good concentration of black fruit, a broad palate, relatively mild acidity and still strong tannins which are a little bitter in the finish. The length is not bad. Overall not a patch on what the Corton could have been. If the tannin resolves further this will be a better wine, but don’t bother searching for it.
