2009 Bichot Albert Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses

An earlier sample of this just seemed a bit dead, this is anything but. High-toned aromas of flowers – plenty of perfume. Full flavoured – very impressive despite a hint of coconut oak in the finish. The perfume pervades the flavours too – not just pretty, this is a wine of authority.

There is some jellied dark fruit, more complexity than the 09 too. Understated tannin mixes through lovely fresh flavours of dark fruit. Mouth-watering – just lovely.

The red fruit aromas are more intense. A width of flavour though fruit seems a background component. Plenty of interest on the finish, but today I prefer the Clos des Ursulines.

Medium cherry-red. High-toned perfume of crunchy cherry-fruit eventually a little creamy oak. There is good width and an edge of fat to the texture too. A creamy vanilla-oak barrel note runs through the core of this and into the mid-palate. Medium, slightly peppery tannin and a good length. For my taste this needs a little cellar time to both round out and to reduce the barrel flavour, but it’s ripe, sweet and tasty already today, and was a very good price.

Denser and more forward, yet the aromatics remain quite fine. There’s a little more fat and excellent balancing acidity. There’s a little mid-palate minerality and a narrow, slowly fading finish. Very good.

Finer, more fruit-driven aromas over a denser core of fruit. Much more intense, your tongue just waters and waters. There’s a creamy edge to the the slow trailing fruit. This is far from easy, but it’s a wow wine!

A tight core of red fruits and a tiny amount of darker reduction on the nose. A hint of dissolved CO2 and deep and lovely cassis fruit. Decent length with just a a little barrel flavour.

2007 Bichot Albert Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers

Medium-plus colour. A little spice, high toned aromas and earth – quite complex. Almost lush with mouth-filling. Decent, fine-grained tannin and a flavour that etches into your palate. A good, quite understated length. Very good.

Higher-toned with faint chocolate. The tannin is a little finer than the Cazetiers’ and there’s good intensity but far more minerality in the mid-palate. A similarly understated finish though everything-else is very different. Equally good but completely different.
