sylvain pataille 2008 marsannay longeroies

sylvain-pataille-2008-marsannay-longeroies

Sylvain’s first vintage with this wine – it’s a great start – yet it was still surprising for me that the 2007 Rion was better in almost every dimension; though I suppose Vosne was the apogee of the 07 vintage – a very (upside) surprising win that Beaux-Monts. Yet this is a very serious wine – worth a significant premium over the Boutton Chassagne villages, and one I’d be happy to fill the cellar with.

2008 Sylvain Pataille, Marsannay Les Longeroies
Medium-plus, purple-rimmed colour. The nose is a mix of very dark red, almost black cherry and beautiful aromas of violet flowers. In the mouth there are polished, intense dark fruit flavours supported by a lovely acidity. Tannin has a slight grain if you search for it but you need a concious effort to find it. Slowly lingering finish. A beautiful Villages wine.
Rebuy – Yes

    Hi Bill,

happy to see that you put Sylvain on the spot. Such a dedicated and symphatic vigneron. It’s always a big pleasure to taste with him. You should have tried his “Le Chapitre”, such a jewel and one of the best kept secrets in Burgundy.

    Cheers,
    Wolfgang

You are right Wolfgang – Le Chapitre (Sylvain refuses to call it a Bourgogne) is worth ‘at least’ a Marsannay label – and by that I mean one of Sylvain’s Marsannays, not the average bottle of others…

We tasted the range of Sylvain’s 08 and 09 wines together with Thomas Bouley and his wines beginning of May in one of his cellary in Marsannay. Chapitre and L’Ancestrale were served last, both outstanding for their level. Le Chapitre Blanc 09 was also a revelation, what energy but already sold!

    Cheers,
    Wolfgang

Thanks Bill / Wolfgang, you prompted me to contact my favourite merchant and, hey presto, I’ve got myself his last case of the 2009 Le Chapitre Rouge – lucky me ! Might go back for the 2008 in due course. Any advice on drinking window Wolfgang ? I’m never in a hurry to commit infanticide like Bill !!

Am intrigued to see Sylvain & Thomas B were tasting together Wolfgang. Last time I saw them both we were all part of a bunch of younger vignerons having a late afternoon beer break in an English pub down an alleyway near the Bank of England in the City of London during the London January 2011 Burg 2009 en primeur tasting week. My debit card was behind the bar ! Sylvain and Thomas were drinking a Japanese lager as I recall but top marks for me went to Alexandrine Roy who joined me sampling an English bitter – and she emptied her half pint glass. What a star !

Ohh well done Mark – Sylvain tells me it was a renowned vineyard before tha advent of classifiactions, and unfortunately (for it) it wasn’t sited in the ‘right place’ when they did classify. Sylvain served it just before his Marsannay Clos du Roi and after Longerois (which I love) for instance – very good wine – How much? if I may… (He’s sold out of 08 & 09 at the domaine)

Please also fewer mentions of Alexandrine – she looks far too good in a cocktail dress – even if she is drinking bitter…

    Mark,

Sylvain’s Le Chapitre 2008 tasted great from barrel in March 2009, November 2009 and every time I open a bottle. However, I would wait for three to four years after opening the first shortly after Arrivage. Prices should be below €20!

    Cheers,
    Wolfgang

    Bill,

Sorry for the delay. I typed a lengthy reply to yours of June 10th but somehow lost it before being able to post and haven’t had chance since.

Cost me £165 In Bond. I can get the 2008 as well if I / we (!)want it. The 2008 is £235 a case (12) ex vat – might be able to get for less.

I understand ‘Le Chapitre’, ancient vines, is literally in the suburbs of Dijon. Sylvain has had the soil tested & reckons it mirrors that of le Musigny. 2009 production 16 hl per ha, he rents 0.85 ha, 6 x 228 litre barrels = approx 150 dozen bottles. Checked my en primeur tasting notes just now – I said at the time “some Bourgogne Rouge, deeply coloured, very flavoursome . I also noted les Langeroies strongly but really liked ‘Clos du Roy’.

Not planning to open Le C anytime soon Wolfgang – will be more than 3/4 years probably. I don’t generally do Bill’s sort of ‘infanticide’ 😉

Bill, will mail you a ‘proposal’ offline !

    Bill,

p.s to the above – what’s this about Alexandrine in a cocktail dress 🙂 ?

Think we should be told ! If you don’t tell I’ll just ask her 😉
