back from the côtes with a few pics…

Typically the last couple of hours of my days in the Côtes finally attracted a hint of blue sky and sunshine – such a shame then that most of those two hours I was in a cellar!

The vignerons had a good laugh at the mad Englishman in their cellars this week – suffering with a bad back I could be quite crippled, being bent double every time I spent more than 10 minutes driving my hire-car – the only way to unwind my frame was to lie flat on my back for a couple of minutes, usually in their cellars! Actually it was a good vantage point to gauge the cleanliness of their cuveries 😉

Anyway, lots of stories and lots of wines which may eventually find their way here. The 09s continue to go through elevage; apart from a few regional and/or villages wines which have already been bottled or will be bottled in the next couple of weeks, a majority will be bottled from springtime. There is jammy, there is beautiful freshness or even, in some cellars, the structure to denote a long life – but rarely all in the same cellar!

Before the pics, a thoughtful piece today on white Burgundy from Jancis.

Bill, I may be jumping the gun, but I’m curious as to your impressions of the ’09s at Geantet-Pansiot (assuming you visited??). I’ve already bought some as futures, but given the very good QPR I expect from there, thinking about buying more.

    Hi Bill,
I really love the way you illustrate your website with stunning pictures of Burgundy, rendering perfectly its atmosphere, bottles labels, etc. I was just wondering what type of photographic equipment you bring with you when you travel down there?

I like photography, I love Burgundy (and its wines of course) so your website is a perfect mix of both, with the english touch to make it unique!
    Thank you

      Hi Stefano
Nothing exotic! I have a 3 megapixel Sony DSC-P5 which I bought in Japan c2001 and DSC-F828 which I bought around 2006. Am always following what’s new and so often ‘nearly’ buy something new, but then there’s always something better just around the corner ;o)

The small one always takes better pictures of bottles – at least after re-sizing to something usable for the web, but I almost exclusively use the bigger one for its mix of wide-angle and zoom in the Côtes. There is nothing even vaguely portable that’s full-frame today – the skiing pics are all from the small one – though aps-c is becoming quite attractive.

I do carry a camera-stand (stative) in the car, but never get around to using it! I do have a big gap in my ability to photograph though – I’m don’t have the personality to ask and get people to pose – I’m not at all shy with vines though!
