white wines with a red nose…

Impressed with my dexterity in Photoshop? Actually it is just a moody (blurred!) image from my phone…
Only a few days after a day-trip to Mürren we find ourselves in Klosters – well it is the season! Mainly blue sky, but getting a little warm with sticky snow by lunchtime – good for delivering the [...]

sunshine in mürren…

A lovely day in Mürren yesterday. Even the long-legged red-head didn’t get too cold – with her coat!

breaking new ground not bones – a helmet’s tale…

Thursday last week and it’s the 09:28 train from Basel to Interlaken – and it was blue sky and sunshine – for 2010 (so far) that’s a novelty . Of-course through the long tunnel in the direction of Olten and we’re back into the more typical grey and mist of January. In-and-out of Bern [...]

snow and wine...

snow and wine…

’twas the annual weekend pilgrimage to Klosters for my pre race ‘training’.
Training consisted of a first night of 2001 Girardin, Puligny Combettes – a wine of gunflint and latent savoury oak, lean yet still balanced. The oak means that it’s not my favourite style but it pleased many around the table. [...]

just an average day-trip to burgundy...

just an average day-trip to burgundy…

Monday was just your average away-day to Burgundy:
5:30am – Alarm, cereal, wash, shave then eventually open my eyes.
6:25am – In the car and away. Plenty of rain as we went through the ‘Doubs’ and around Besançon. If the sky didn’t exactly clear, at least there was no rain when, at 9:10am, I pulled [...]

in the côtes…

I’m just back from burgundy, and I have to say, with a stinking cold – no wines for me in the next days. Also not so picturesque while I was there – too much mist. Still I have a few things in my notebook to fill in the gap
PS – anybody [...]

2006 Mugneret-Gibourg, Bourgogne
Relatively deep colour with purple hints. The nose is heavy with dark, sugar-coated cherry. There’s a soft texture and decent concentration. Slightly tart acidity is more than offset by young fruit that is both stylish and concentrated plus shows a good extra dimension in the mid-plate. A reasonable, [...]

jadot vosne-romanée 1er petits monts 02 plus vosne pics…

As I opened a Vosne, I have an excuse to add a few photos (below) from a promenade of sorts I made in the village last week. As you can see, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair’s ‘I’m the only crane in the village’ crown has gone to Château Latour, who, economic depression or not, are still ploughing [...]

of trips in the côtes plus corton pics…

Just back from 3 lovely days in the Côtes. Hillside walks, alfresco lunches, darkened cellars and playing boulle. We had luck with the weather despite some occasionally threatening cloud. Some very nice wines were drunk along the way and I may add the first of those notes tomorrow – assuming I have [...]

nicolas potel 1997 volnay & an april fool (almost me)

Back from a very nice week-long break. Whilst we only skiied for 2.5 days it was good to recharge the batteries. I received a number of emails and ‘comments’ during the week that were related to the Spring Issue of the Burgundy Report – I’ll work my way through them in the next [...]

back from the côtes...

back from the côtes…

Two days in the Côtes and a whole book full of notes to try and put in some semblance of order for the Spring Burgundy Report which should be ‘out’ on Friday evening CET. After a tough 2 hours (well, maybe not!) in Vosne yesterday afternoon tasting the 2007 vintage with the vignerons – [...]

a day in the côtes & terres d’arômes 2007 volnay

Just back from a single day in the Côtes – leaving at 6:00am, returning at 10:30pm and including 5 hours driving – I slept well!
Last week I should have made two days of visits, but it wasn’t possible to re-arrange everything. Yesterday’s visits Roumier and de Vogüé made up for that though, as did [...]
