2002 bouchard père beaune 1er grèves de l'enfant jesus

2002 bouchard père beaune 1er grèves de l’enfant jesus

The first from this 6-pack, bought on release.
2002 Bouchard Père et Fils, Beaune 1er Grèves l’Enfant Jesus
Medium, medium-plus colour. The nose is very fine; there’s latent oak that brings a little espresso macchiato into the equation but essentially it’s about a fresh, dark red fruit and occasional faint whiffs of bacon. Smooth, [...]

alex gambal 2007 chambolle-musigny 1er les charmes

alex gambal 2007 chambolle-musigny 1er les charmes

2007 Alex Gambal, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Les Charmes
Medium, medium-plus colour. The nose shows a little savoury smokiness over a deeper, but tighter fruit core. In the mouth, your first impression is of something not entirely substantial, yet there is an extension into the the finish and width in the mid-palate that suggests much [...]

2005 marc morey chassagne morgeot

2005 marc morey chassagne morgeot

2005 Morey Marc, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Morgeot
A half bottle. Medium, medium-plus yellow colour. A hint of sulfur, but otherwise soft yet penetrating notes of butterscotch and cream over ripe but very pretty fruits. Excellent intensity with slowly penetrating acidity, this is both rich and powerful. In some ways it’s a little over [...]

georges mugneret-gibourg bourgogne 2006

georges mugneret-gibourg bourgogne 2006

2006 Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, Bourgogne
The second from this case. Medium-plus colour. The deep nose shows plenty of dark cherry. More concentrated than you expect given the label, with a velvet texture and showing an extra dimension of flavour in the mid-plate. A decent finish too. This wine is in an excellent place right now!

2007 bonneau du martray corton-charlemagne

2007 bonneau du martray corton-charlemagne

2007 Bonneau du Martray, Corton-Charlemagne
Very pale yellow colour. Perhaps it was a little cold, but this was very tight to start with. Eventually the nose starts to give up fresh apple fruit backed by cold (trifle) custard. In the mouth this is absolutely linear, firing into an understated but very long [...]

nicolas potel 2000 savigny-lès-beaune les peuillets

two recent clos from fevre...

two recent clos from fevre…

With all the bruhaha of p.ox surrounding wines from Fevre in 2002 – typically, a vintage I have something close to 12 bottles of – I suppose that I will have to make those bottles my house wine for 2010, despite strong competition from Gambal’s 2006 Bourgogne!
Anyway a 2001 and a 2002 were opened last [...]

white wines with a red nose...

white wines with a red nose…

Impressed with my dexterity in Photoshop? Actually it is just a moody (blurred!) image from my phone…
Only a few days after a day-trip to Mürren we find ourselves in Klosters – well it is the season! Mainly blue sky, but getting a little warm with sticky snow by lunchtime – good for delivering the [...]

2006 alex gambal bourgogne blanc

2006 alex gambal bourgogne blanc

It’s not a proper tasting note I suppose, but I’m sure you’ll get the idea
2006 Alex Gambal, Bourgogne Blanc
I might have written elsewhere that there’s a ‘deliciousness’ to chardonnay (sorry white burgundy!) that can really perk you up – particularly if you’re tasting at 9:00am! I recall a tasting about 1 [...]

Dry River: Martinborough's Cult Pinot Noir

Dry River: Martinborough’s Cult Pinot Noir

There is nothing else quite like Dry River Pinot Noir in New Zealand, or even in the world for that matter.  Dry River, located in Martinborough, North Island of New Zealand, was the name of one of the oldest Wairapa sheep stations in New Zealand, dating to 1877. It was later named Dyerville, and it [...]

1995 rené engel vosne-romanée 1er les brulees

1995 rené engel vosne-romanée 1er les brulees

Yes I know it’s (yet) another Vosne, but my 1999 Pavelot Dominode was corked – honest – at least this is a good bottle
1995 René Engel, Vosne-Romanée 1er Les Brulees
Medium rusty-red colour, more rust than red at the edges. Forward aromas of part fresh, part baked red fruits over a sterner [...]

d’ardhuy 2005 vosne-romanée 1er les chaumes (+ being boring!)

I realised that I have become rather predictable after tidying in the cellar this weekend – I started to dig out bottles that needed revisiting, only to realise that almost every second bottle came from Vosne-Romanée. I had a similar feeling last year when most came from Gevrey…
I suppose that I have at least [...]
