A wine store near me has a large selection of Burgs from David Duband. I can find little information about him or his wines. Can anyone help?

Hi Mark,
There is very little information online about David Duband and he has no website. I visited his Domaine in November last year and tasted most of the 2007 wines, I was very very impressed. The price v quality i think is exceptional. I picked up a few bottle when i was there a NSG "les Pruliers", a Morey "Clos Sorbe" and a Clos de la Roche, which i brought back to Australia and are in the cellar. The price of his wines in Australia is outrageous, due to taxes mainly. The Clos de la Roche was 55 euros at the Domaine, here in Australia $320.00.
I have tried to find out some information about the 2008 releases, but as you said very hard to find any info. I believe though he is very worth checking out if you have access to his wines at a reasonable price. Very interested to hear your thoughts.Greeting to everyone on the forum as well, my first post here.
Kind Regards

I have visited David many times, we are friends. He's a nice guy and a very good winemaker. His wines are made in a pure style very Pinot like. The wines don't need 10 years or more to become charming. David thinks his wines give a lot of pleasure after 6-7 years. I have several wines in my cellar, Clos Sorbes 2005, Clos de la Roche 2005, Charmes-Chambertin 2005. Like Adam said his wines are priced very reasonable. He just got a tiny parcel of Le Chambertin so he now has a nice range.

Before 2006 this domaine had 8 hectares mostly in Nuits and in the Haut-cotes de Nuits.
After 2006 Mr. F.Feuillet(boss of TRIGANO) brought in his 9.20 ha (which was mostly the old Truchot domaine from Morey-St.Denis(7 ha)) holding.
This domaine is mention sometimes in the bourgogne d'aujourdhui. Let me know for which release to you need some information. Mr. Duband makes all the wine.Posted 2 years ago # -

The wines are well made, but very fruity and ripe. Personally, not my favorite style.

The wines I have had from Duband have been absolutely dreadful, which is why his taking over the Truchot domaine seemed such a tragedy, but to be fair I've had nothing post 03 and things may have improved immeasurably.

Duband's wines used to show a lot of new oak, but he has cut back on that. The wines have improved.

Opened a 2002 Duband Vosne Romanee with dinner last night.Upon opening the wine had very little aroma with only a hint of fruit. It had little tannin with to much acid, mostly unbalanced. After 1/2 hr. it started to open up with a hint of cherry fruit and went well with food. After 1 hr. it showed more fruit and earth with less acid and was better balanced. The finish showed a hint of pepper (?) and licorice. Overall after 1 hr it went well with food. It turned into a nice village wine from a good vintage. The more young Burgs I drink, the more I have to let them breathe. What are your thoughts?

Until recently, the wines were very modernist in approach, but the wines he showed last March at the Paulée in San Francisco were much more traditional in style. I've not visited in the past but am hoping to find time to do so on my upcoming trip and find out what's been going on.

Claude, did he change in the last year? I tasted his wines for the first time a year ago during the Paulee in NY, and was ready to cry. I have been a longtime Truchot fan and it was sad to see the same vines being used to make wine in a much more modern style.

Howard -- I don't know exactly when the change was or what the story is, as I've never visited (but I will try to squeeze him in this fall). In March 2008 at the Paulée out here in San Francisco, I tasted the 2006s and did not like them. But as I said above, the wines he showed here last March were a whole 'nother thing. Several other people said the same thing. It's still a different style from that of Truchot, but not modernist or forced the way the earlier wines were.

Claude,
Thanks. I will have to try them again this winter during the Paulee in NY. The lineup of wineries coming looks unbelievable, even by the standards of prior years. http://www.lapaulee.com/welcome.html

For what it's worth I tasted the 2007 Duband Morey Clos Sorbé with lunch - obvious sweet and oaky nose with a hint of background reduction - simple, sweet, open knit and definitely not anywhere near my rebuy list from a style perspective. How much of that is the vintage? - perhaps 25%...
