If one were to visit the Cotes de Nuits for a few days avec la famille, what are the best values for hotels and restaurants. Is a car really necessary?
If this is insane and Beaune would be a better locale, say so.

In my opinion you need a car. please let me know your budget for wine, sleeping and eating?
I'm twice in the year in the burgundy.(since 34 years)
In June I was in Puligny-Montrachet for one night and the next day in Beaune.
In Beaune I stay mostly in the Belle Epoque hotel. It's near the centre and there are some good restaurants nearby.
Wine: Depends on what we find. I have a hard time passing up a decent GC with some age on it. Mostly $50-$100/day.
Sleeping: Around $150US/night for the 4 of us.
Eating: Around $150/day with some flexibility for a good 3*** meal.
Wine: If you go directly to a vigneron they will not have some older wines to sell. You only get the last 2 years(at the moment 2007 or 2008).
Hotel: The Belle epoque has a suite(around 130 € with 2 rooms).
I'm eating in Beaune either in the Caveau des Arches or in the restaurant la ciboulette.
This are 2 excellent places with a good p/e.
In Nuits I stay mostly in the Hostellerie Saint Vincent and go to eat to la Cabotte there.
For me the best place to eat at the moment is the Hotel Montrachet in Puligny. There we take always the 55€ menu.
I'm visiting Burgundy quite often 5-6 times in a year.
I just came back from my favorite region and I stayed in Meursault, Le Chevreuil, it's a small hotel with a very good restaurant. Prices are very, very reasonable for the quality. You do need a car though.
I can second the recommendation for Belle Epoque. Great location, reasonable rates and good suites/family rooms that can take 4/5 people. They also have a parking facility.
You'll definitely need a car for your trip around the region.
Definitely need a car - and because I always have one I invariably stay in Beaune. En-famille you have alternatives like Gites and such - too big for 1-2 people I think - plus I'm limited to somwhere that accepts my dog...
There are a few very reasonably priced hotels on the Place Madeleine - if you plump for Beaune
I stayed at Anne Gros guesthouse attached to the winery in Vosne-Romanee which was reasonably priced and allowed a good deal of flexibility. However you do need to book well in advance ....

Beaune is best for hotels and the ability to walk around. Shopping should be decent as well. Gites can be great if you need more space or plan to stay in the room a bit. Cote de Nuits isn't too far off from Beaune, just 10 minutes will get you to Nuits-Saint-Georges. And, tasting through the Cote de Nuits, you will often find yourself taking this exit off the A31 autoroute. A car is a must. You can find cheap rentals at Renault in Beaune. Renault Espace works well for families btw.
Cheers!
Hmm, sounds like the consortium stongly recommends a car. We're not much for shopping except for bookstores and scouting for good food, but it also sounds like Beaune may be the better base station. We're better off setting up at one locale for random jaunts since the replants don't always sit well.
Does anyone know whether motorbikes/mopeds are available for rent in Beaune? I will be travelling solo.
