Have had a couple of 2001s and 2005s from Digioia-Royer and have enjoyed them. By impression is of clean, pure, well made wines. Lowish levels of oak, no over extraction or over ripeness. The 2005s were significantly bigger and more structured - and were pretty tight the last time I tried them.

Certainly worth trying.

Rick,

This was my first Digioia-Royer wine, it was served blind at a friends house. Very nice wine although the vintage kind of scews all wines so no idea what to make of the producer from this wine alone...

Funny, I was planning on checking out some '08s from Digioia-Royer this week. Fortunate to have an importer here in the SF Bay area. Claude Kolm has had some nice things to say 'bout the wines, as does Coates. Will, have you (or any one else) sampled any other vintages from this producer?

I really like your notes, Will, especially since you have the courage to unreveal your wrong guesses - that gives an even better picture.

It goes without saying - also thanks from my side Will.

Digioia Royer is a domaine I always hear good things about, despite them haveing no 'super-great' vineyards - yet I still never managed to vist - more fool me!

Below are a few notes on some Burgundies enjoyed at the weekend, there were also a few non burgundian wines enjoyed but I've left those notes out.

06 Jobard Bourgogne Blanc
Light nose, still quite tight an unyielding. It had a little butter on the palate with some fresh citrus and minerals. This wine is still a baby and needs time or time in a decanter to unwind.

Blind Wine 1: 2003 Chambolle Musigny Digioia Royer
Fully open burgundy nose with lots of development. Stinky farmyard, sweet spice and great fruit make this a very interesting wine. The palate is a little different though, firmer with rough tannin and plush mouth feel although lacking a little acidity. The nose was pointing towards burgundy but the palate is hinting further South. In the end I guess 2003 Gevrey. It’s revealed as a 2003 DG Chambolle and I’m impressed by the quality and approachability of the wine

Blind Wine 3: 2005 Louis Carillon Puligny Montrachet
Tight, tight, tight. Not much on the nose apart from some light minerals. On the palate this is all about minerality and structure. I think that this wine is still fast asleep. It was very austere and savoury after the Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay and needs a few more years to unwind.

2001 Hospices de Beaune Mazis-Chambertin Cuvée Madeleine Collignon Henri Boillot
This wine showed beautifully. It’s showing a little development on the nose but wide open at the moment. This is a complex and multifaceted wine that is maturing beautifully. The balance between the fruit, structure and acid was a joy to behold. Great stuff, wish I had a case in the cellar. This got my vote for WOTN.

2005 Daniel Rion Nuits St Georges 1er cru Terres Blanc
This was a much better showing than the 05 Carillion. It had the sweet fruit that I would expect from 05 in abundance. It had good structure too but isn’t as elegant as its Cote De Beuane cousins. This was a really delicious wine and I was surprised when Sean informed me that it was made from Pinot Blanc.
