Thanks for the tip BF!
Is there anywhere not shown on winesearcher where these are available in the US? The ones I've found are $70+ which is just a tad steep. For that price I've found a number of Potel bottlings that are really worthy.

My most whites are from Bernard Morey and now from Thomas Morey.
I never had a premox bottle from them. Even a normal St.Aubin is just a great one.
At the moment I drink a 2007 red Santenay Clos Rosseau which was yesterday very closed but now it's one of the greater Santenay. Pour strawberry in your mouth.

I don't know folks, my hit rate for whites has been good. No premox'd bottles from the following modest selection:
'98 F. Jobard - le Trezin
'98 F. Jobard - Blagny
'01 F. Jobard - Blagny x 2
'02 Morey-Blanc - Poruzots - Really nice too!
'03 Morey-Blanc - St. Aubin les Pucelles x 4 (one corked, but shop exchanged for me)
The MB's were on a "fire-sale" at the local shop, I wish I had bought more of the Poruzots, but for $8 the St Aubin makes for a nice bargain.

Cheepness belongs in monster movies, not wine budgets, but that being the case (no pun intended) I did acquire a few bottles of 96 D. Laurent.

A Morey St. Denis Clos Sorbet was opened after a rushed day and didn't have time to settle so it was cloudy with some browning on the rim. First tastes were dissapointingly soupy and I lambasted myself for buying the stuff. I focused on the crispy scallops with an AuVigue Macon in lament. I had never had a wine come around like that though; after a half an hour it somehow got some focus and actually settled into being a decent wine. The oaky vanillins went away and some really nice red berries showed themselves with brassy tannins asserting. A really decent compliment to the lamb chop.

A couple of days later we tried one of his 96 MSD Millands. That one remained flaccid, indistinct and portish, a real dissapointment.

So much for this pass at the Carnival game of old french burgs.

The two P. Morey (also not Morey-Blanc) 2004 Meursault villages I had earlier last year seemed a bit advanced, more so than my novice palate would think, but were not undrinkable. I'm not sure of the track-record or life-expectancy of the villages, but the oxidation was there. ?premature or expected?

Hi Emile,

Happy New Year ! Go easy on Bill on the other thread please ;-) ? As the person who started that thread I've been wincing almost & keeping my head down - lacking the awesome knowledge of you pros !!

Back to this one - opened another Morey 04 BB tonight. No premox whatsoever. Thought it might be a bit musty, maybe slightly corked earlier, but think that's blowing off and am now happier with it 3 hours after opening from a very cold garage.

Sorry to hear about the Leflaive issues. Must say I'm surprised to hear what you say as my perception, without looking at Cellartracker, was that Leflaive's premox record was amongst the best. 90% premox seems incredible - if not bizarre ? Not a storage or cellaring issue one wonders ?

I must (to date) be one of the luckiest no premox folk around it seems but, famous last words & crosses fingers and other body parts here (!), I've plenty of white burgs from 1996 onwards still to pull from storage and sample. One of those that worries me most is Ch de Maltroye. Also Ramonets.

Rick, I have 3 bottles of Pierre Morey Meursault Perrieres 2004 left as well. All have similar color to the bottle which was oxidized. I do not have high hopes for bottles. All bottles were imported by Wilson Daniels. I opened a bottle in 08/08, which was chisled and tight as a tick as you would expect. No premature oxidation.

???

Goughie13, Pierre Morey Bourgone Blanc 2004 has had issues in Northern California. I have tasted good bottles back in 2007/2008 when I sold them, but since then restauranteurs have had issues. In fact, a Distributor just closed out the remainder of the wine, and a restauranteur I know purchased the balance and sent it all back due to premature oxidation. Fact. This happened in the last 3 months.

Additionally, there have been many issues with Domaine Lelfaive wines in recent years(my most recent was PM Pucells 2001), and, of course, Pierre Morey made those wines from 1989-2007. La Paulee in SF last year, 2010, held a verticals dinner featuring Domaine Lelfaive and Domaine Dujac, and 90% of the Domaine Leflaive wines were prematurely oxidized. The ticker for the dinner was a few thousand US dollars, too.

You should arrange a visit the next time you are over. I've been to see him a few times and I must say he is great fun. Our visits there have tended to go on for hours and hours. Last time we tasted through the current bottled vintage, the new vintages in cask, a couple of library bottles and then went off to visit his mother to taste some of this fathers old wines. He has a good mix of Pulignys/Meursaults and the prices are relatively keen at the cellar door (less so when I've seen them on retail over here).

Will, nice wines there for you also. I must try Phillippe Chavy soon. Chandon de B I bought various wines from mid to late 90's but have been generally disappointed. Perhaps they are better this century.

Phil, I've picked in Noirots and Sentiers for Arlaud and they also now have a small quantity of Chatelots. I've not tried any 04's but will be pleased for Cyprien if he's avoided the green issue. Must ask him about that. Maybe he'll be in London next week.

Bill, I can see you are becoming obsessive about 'Raquel' (aka Floriane Gormotte). Mind you that would not be difficult ;-). Tell you what I promise, if I do nothing else this weekend, I'll mail you a piece on the Raquel story comparison from the vendange with a photo or two of F.

On Duband I nearly put my foot in it one day during the vendange being about to be non committal Duband who was harvesting nearby when Herve I think it was casually mentioned D was a cousin of the Arlauds. Do my best to educate you though - how's about 2008 Clos St Denis one day or I'll try and save you one of my 2 remaining 2001 Charmes ?

Shame about your Pierre Morey's Meursault villages. I have 2 or 3 left of a case of the 2001's bought bin end from J&B which have been uniformly very nice indeed - no issues at all.

I didn't perceive I'd drunk 'that much' over the holiday but putting it down 'on paper' rather surprised me. Had a 1997 Engel Vosne Brulees out for drinking as well but resisted that and put it away for another day.

A humble apology also, with some embarassment, I never got around to posting 2010 vendange ramblings. We worked so hard, harder than I ever remembered in other years, I honestly never had time for posting from MSD & once back in early October the demands of my UK banking day job just took over and almost continue to do so to the detriment of all else.

The Charmes was much more 'like it' ! Arlaud's style for me isn't 'big' & power, but this was a beautiful, deeper, colour than the Lambrays. Quite a melange of tasty red and black fruits, violets, some mineral, lovely balance and grip, smooth, rounded, mouth filling and quite lovely.

You will have to educate me - I've only had disappointing bottles that reminded me of Duband - it can happen and I remain 'open'.

Muchas gracis - and from my side too.

Not much to report from xmas for me - I can't compete with you boys this year - always the chauffeur and (domestic management excepted) most palates I encounter measure quality by the litre/£. Still the 94 Hermaitage Bessards was a hit for me with the Christmas plate, and Mischeif and Mayhems 07 St.Romaine has softened nicely - drinking very well at the moment

Great post Mark,

Thanks for sharing. Looks like a great run there, especially with the white burgundies and your avoidence of Pox. I'd assume that the 95 Lambrays was just closed up tight as the 95s have tended to be, although I had a Grivot Suchots recently that was opening up nicely. I have a nice run of Roumier MSD Bussiere (05->08) at the moment and I hope they turn out as nicely as your bottle has. I've only tried the 06/7 and they were pretty burly when compared to the Chambolle village.

I had some nice wines over Christmas although really nothing blew me away. On the burgundy front I enjoyed the following:

2002 Javillier Meursault Les Tillets (Magnum) - Sleeping hard, and not very impressive at the moment
2005 Philippe Chavy Puligny Folatieres - Tight, yet delicious with lots of complexity
2007 Philippe Chavy Puligny Corves Des Vignes - Very racy, but perhaps a little simple
2007 Philippe Chavy Puligny Pucelles - I thought it was a little fat, my drinking companion thought there was too much acid, still awkward and needs a few years
2001 Chandon De Brailles Corton Bressandes - Needed a good decant to open up and the last glass was the best. Getting there on the nose but the palate is a little behind at the moment. Give this a little more time and it should be lovely
2003 Potel Clos St Denis (Magnum) - Delicious, obviously too young but a very pretty wine not showing any vintage characteristic
2006 Roumier Chambolle - Delicious, silky texture. Not wow, but very impressive
2006 Roumier Morey Clos Des Bussiere - Deeper and longer than the roumier but less buxom

HNY to all. May your 2011 Burgundy experiences all be positive one's (unlikely I guess but ....) !

Without wanting in any way to suggest "a mine were better than your's, look what I got" type thread, the forum, which as Bill recently & sagely pointed out to me is our's to use, seems to have been quiet of late ?

So hear's a belated contribution from me with apologies for 'rabbitting on'. Impressions of 2010 from Arlaud of, for me, remarkable similarities to 2008. Low yields though, some rot & poor grapes from the lower lying sites, much better/good from the higher & better drained terroirs. If you are used to buying Arlaud's Bourgogne Roncevie though you had better do so whilst you can from the 2009 vintage as frost in early 2010 has really devastated the Roncevie vines - resembled a vinous 'desert' when we quickly passed through with little to harvest. Romain Arlaud subsequently showed me one vat part filled, of five, with Roncevie fruit - the others empty.

Always the intention year on year to try certain 'better' wines over a Christmas / New Year holiday as a special time which invariably I don't adhere to but this year, in part with family, sampled the following :-

Darviot-Perrin, 1998, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru Blanchots-Dessus - with the Morey below from an auction purchase circa October 2010 case of each. My 3rd bottle I think - no premox on any of them. Drunk on its own without food over 2 days from Xmas Eve - fridge overnight & allowed to warm back up. All 3 a quite deep, initially worrying looking, gold but I put this down to what must have been very ripe fruit and a serious use of new oak. Quite exotic ripe dense fruit flavours akin to apricot & pineapple over a vanillin, mineral base. Quite long. Certainly not premox'd. Guess might hold in its present state a while yet albeit a bit more acidity would have enhanced. Similar to the '97 of which I've 6 left of 12 - no premox on those so far either.

Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru 1995 - taken to, and opened at, my parents on Boxing Day as first of 2 GC's with lunch. Big lack of attention mistake here. Thought I'd taken a '97 from my 'cellar' of which I have 3/4 but picked up the sole 95 and opened, poured and sampled it at the dinner table only realising the year once it was gone. Colour was ok, light, thin ruby which is what I've seen from older Lambrays, no rust or browning. But it surprised & disappointed as unforgiving, tight on nose and palate, and really just anonymous - closed ? Didn't really get anything from it at all which was what made me look at the label to then see my selection mistake. Hey ho.

Domaine Arlaud, 2001, GC Charmes-Chambertin. Got 6 of these at a great price in November 2010 when looking for 3 bottles of an Arlaud Morey 1er cru for a Manchester (UK) Wine Society tasting & was offered these as a Bin End. The 3 disappeared at speed at MWS on the night !! Opened one after the Lambrays. At GBP 35 v good ! Arlaud have 2 parcels for Charmes, one lower in Mazoyeres near the RN 74, the other high up across the road from Latricieres.

Domaine Louis Michel, 2000, Chablis 1er cru Montee de Tonnerre. Love Michel's Chablis and do they keep ? Can't recall a lot about this other than enjoying it but do remember thinking, whilst it had all the Chablis & Michel de Tonnerre typicity I recalled from earlier bottles, it didn't impress me as much as those - bottle variation or jaded palate maybe. Looking forward to the 2002 not touched yet.

Pierre Morey (not Morey-Blanc), 1997 Meursault-Perrieres 1er cru. From the same auction as the Darviot-Perrin wine - whilst was / could have been a major premox gamble, certainly haven't turned out to be so far, & at an average price of GBP 20 :-). Confess to a hint of pro bias where Pierre is concerned as he's such a nice guy, never mind an excellent vigneron, and I've never had a 'duff' bottle from him. Latest was my 3rd or 4th of these since November. No premox or suggestion of such. This bottle, my enjoyable seasonal white burg drinking, and reading some posts recently on wineberserkers.com I just flatly found bizarre, made me break the 'habits of a lifetime' and post my experiences on the wikipedia premox site. This latest Perrieres, whilst deeeply coloured again, was a lovely drink, all the usual fruit / minerality typicity of this cru & the domaine, with just adequate (on the wane ?) acidity for the vintage. The remainder might not last long !

Morey-S-D, 1997, Clos de la Bussiere, Domaine G Roumier. This, as usual, for me was brilliant, and shaded the Arlaud Charmes as my favourite season red. One of those Burgs which for me gives something different with every sip - and sip it I do - slowly. A stunning red/black limpid colour. Pronounced, complex nose, I'm poor at describing. Everytime I see a reference in books etc to Christophe's Bussiere then 'rustic' or similar seems to be mentioned. Clearly it won't be akin to a Chambolle but I love it and have bought it consistently in several vintages and hope to continue to do so, a least as a six pack rather than 12, despite the escalating price. It does have earthy and perhaps ferrous terroir elements under the viney fruit and a very pinot, lovely little sharp, cherry bite, also with complex hints of other things - am sure 'got' tobacco at one point. Super structure. So nice !

Etienne Sauzet, 1995, Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru Les Referts. Wow ! Premox ? Forget it here. This is excellent & sooooo fresh I can't believe its 15 yrs old. I've had it since release. Started sipping it v late last night watching the start of The Ashes final test thinking Michael Clarke might regret deciding to bat first !!! Doesn't look, nor taste, 'older' at all. Pale gold. Super pronounced nose - floral, acacia, hawthorn blossm notes, fruit I can't get but maybe hints of banana, fruit cocktail, all over caramel vanillin & some wood. Initially quiet on the front palate but then, bang ! A really big mid/back palate 'hit' of fruit and just ace eye watering acidity, quite chewy almost before it disappears, with a lingering, almost steely, mineral Puligny finish. This wine took me by surprise, so good is it for my taste. Am half way down the bottle, to finish this evening, and just had a quick splash revisit from the fridge in an ISO glass to check wasn't hallucinating last night !! Could be one of my WOTY even at this stage as I don't generally 'do' / can't afford GC whites other than some Corton-Charlemagne's. Not sure how long this will keep - a good while yet on this evidence - sniff, only got one more. The empty glass has heady aromas one almost feels like drowning in.

Roll on the 2009 London en primeur tastings and a brief get away from the routine.

Happy 2011 drinking one and all.
