A wine that shows the difficulty of those that picked just a little later in this vintage – given the size of this cuvée, it would be no surprise if a significant proportion of the mix was picked just a little later than optimum. I note that the price is also up 20% versus the excellent 2004 and 2005 versions, both of which became ‘house wines’ chez moi. 2006 Louis Jadot, Bourgogne Chardonnay Medium yellow. The nose shows faint bready notes over equally faint pear fruit. Quite full in the mouth, also quite dense. Whilst your mouth slowly waters after you swallow, it still seems to lack a little freshness. A reasonable finish, but just a little too clumsy and heavy… Rebuy – No

1993 Méo-Camuzet, Corton Clos Rognets I last opened one of these Méo’s about 3 years ago and it was a big wine, I expected nothing less tonight, but this was not bright in the glass. The nose started very earthy, then went through a mushroom phase before an understated red fruit impression. In the mouth the acidity is to the fore, though not too much so. The flavours are middle-weight and interesting but far below expectation. Shame. Rebuy – No (But other bottles have been much better – in fact I’d pay $25 for an 93 Aloxe-Corton that tasted like this – but not more)

2000 Jean-Marc Boillot, Pommard 1er Les Jarollières Medium, medium-minus colour. The nose is a long way towards maturity with soft, ripe and sweet red berry fruit and faint cocoa notes that could come from a 1980′s wine. In the mouth there is still a block of tannin in the middle that needs resolving that has a dry edge. Decent enough acidity, if slightly lifted. Finishes well. Still not as tasty as its first 18 months in bottle but far better than most of the years that followed. Needs anothe 2-3 years for the tannins. Rebuy – no

I spotted this on a usual merchant’s list for 29 francs – most ‘name’ villages wines cost 40+ francs, so naturally I was hoping for good things despite not knowing the name: 2005 Remi Jeanniard, Morey St.Denis Vieilles Vignes Medium, medium-plus colour. The nose is high-toned and a little alcoholic with a suggestion of a red-fruit core. Smooth entry, quite well concentrated and balanced – also in the mid-palate. I was ready to love this wine – particularly for the more than interesting tariff – but the smooth tannins have a strongly bitter finish to them that’s like charcoal. I assume it’s barrel derived but there are no other oak artifacts – strange and a shame as the rest of the wine is nice. I [....]

Domaine Denis Bachelet have updated their labels for 2005 and very nice they are too – also new and just off the picture is a tiny neck ‘lozenge’ for the vintage. I already noted in the last entry that the 2004 was problematic to start with, so I gave it a day-2 chance… 2004 Bachelet, Côtes de Nuits Villages Medium-plus colour. The nose is pungent with cedary green odours, a significant swirl is required to release a faint sweet red note. Overnighting makes little difference to the aroma profile. The palate is supple, well textured and has a ripe complexion, but the cedar is very forward here too. Excellent for CdNV length, slightly creamy – but too pungent, even on day two. Rebuy – No [....]

If I’m relatively happy with the reduction of the green component in the 2004 Georges Mugneret then this wine begs a question or two. If it has improved to the same level (I don’t have a 1 year ago reference point) then it must have been quite a challenge. It is rather green today and will have to have quite a turnaround to achieve a rebuy rating. 2004 Ghislaine Barthod, Chambolle-Musigny Medium colour. The nose is dominated by that cedar-green note, it does slowly recede over 2 hours, revealing more of the ripe red strawberry fruit below. In the mouth it’s ripe and sweet, full of red fruits, a nice texture and a good burst of concentration on the mid-palate – but it’s also here [....]

Guess why I bought this – correct – because I’d never heard of the 1er cru and thought ‘let’s have a look’. Even after I found out it was red, I still thought ‘why not?’ 2004 Louis Carillon et Fils, St.Aubin 1er Les Pitangerets Medium ruby red, already a little development at the rim. The nose starts a little like roast red tarts with an overlay of herbal, slightly cedarish notes. In the mouth there’s nice enough texture but the tannins coupled with the acidity will certainly make your mouth pucker – it’s an interesting contrast to the ripe fruit. A nice middle-weight wine with food, but more challenging without. I’m not unhappy to have drunk my first Pitangerets, though I’m not straining at the [....]

1993 Esmonin Père et Fils, Gevrey 1er Clos St.Jacques Medium colour. The nose is rather mature and quite ripe with an undertow of undergrowth and eventually chocolate. After the last 1993 this is fuller and riper with apparently lower acidity. There is a medium-plus length of finish and very understated structure. I would characterise this as a very friendly and ‘cosy’ wine – particularly for a 93 – one to curl up with. Possibly not a wine for the ages but it’s coming into a nice drinking window now. Rebuy – Yes 1993 Dujac, Gevrey 1er Combottes Corked – damn, I was really looking forward to this comparison! 1998 Jean Chauvenet, Nuits St.Georges A relatively narrow and slightly volatile nose – some, though marginal, improvement [....]
