2005 Louis Latour, Aloxe-Corton 1er Les Chaillots Medium colour. Limited high tones but decent depth of sugary red fruit. Medium density, slightly astringent but very fine tannin plus a super expansion of fruit in the mid-palate. This is surprisingly long, though much of that flavour is slightly bitter oak-juice. It’s far from seamless but it’s ebulliant delivery has made a friend of me. Rebuy – Maybe

Definitely not for label drinkers… When this arrived I wondered if the beige label design was for a particular market or distribution channel, but it seems that all the Bouchard bottles are now wearing such livery. I know that the old/outgoing labels were far from the height of design extravagance, but if a change was coming, I would have assumed that BP&Fils, with their Champagne House owner might have eeked out a little marketing magic. It’s probably better to concentrate on the wine I suppose… 2005 Bouchard Père et Fils, Mercurey Medium-plus colour. Direct and concentrated fruit on the nose – dark red – little complexity. 2005 Rapet Père et Fils, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Les Vergelesses Medium, medium-plus colour. The nose only gives hints of interest in the first minutes, but gradually offers up a beautiful mix of raspberry and violets with occasional traces of caramel, but these pretty aromas come and go. A very soft entry – maybe just a little too soft – but smooth tannin and decent acidity. The flavour gently builds into the mid-palate and decays just as gently. In the middle the fruit is clean, has reasonable depth and some extra creamy dimension. So I’m not sure about this – lovely aromatics and very pretty fruit, but I felt it somehow just a little too soft. Rebuy – Maybe

The pic is from my bottle of the 2001, whereas this 2002 by comparison disappoints. Medium gold and plenty of oxidative aromas and flavours. Given that I (the hater of oxidation) still drank 3 glasses, shows there is still something positive to be said for the wine – though this is clearly an aberration – (mainly) aligoté isn’t susceptible to p.ox is it? 2002 Ponsot, Morey St.Denis 1er Clos des Monts Luisants Vieilles Vignes Medium gold. The nose hits you with mild oxidation and a pronounced mineral note. The palate is concentrated and mouth-watering – very long with the help of that acidity too. The oxidation is there in the flavours but on a lower level than the nose. Lots of dimension in the mid-palate [....]

2005 Vincent Girardin, Santenay Les Charmes Medium-plus ruby-red colour. The nose started blocky with a little dark oak and roasted dark fruit – a little uncouth – but five minutes in the glass and it is transformed with very pretty flashes of red and black fruits. In the mouth it starts in a similar fashion; muddled dark fruits and oak but quite silky. This improves no end, though never becoming as captivating as the nose. I have a whole bunch of Malconsorts that I might be working my way through in the next weeks! Direct from the domaine this was only €51 – I was amazed they would still have these (at least at this price) as that’s very cheap for a perfect provenance Vosne 1er, or at least if it’s half-good. 1999 Château de Chorey, Beaune 1er Le Cras Vieilles Vignes Medium-plus colour. Wide, a little herbal and mineral with a dark core of fruit. In your mouth there’s great fruit though it’s wrapped in plenty of structure – it’s relatively smooth but the tannin still needs a number of years. The depth is super and there is a mineral length. Don’t touch again for at least 5 years. Rebuy – Maybe

2005 Bouchard Père et Fils, Chambolle-Musigny A négoce wine. Medium-plus cherry-red colour. The nose has decent width but better depth, but note that it has an appreciable oak base. In the mouth the concentration is almost good and there is plenty of tannin though it seems more wood than grape-driven. The length is good, but despite it being a decent enough and very drinkable effort, indeed a wine you may be happy to have in your cellar in 10 years time, I see this as well behind the better village cuvées from the 2005 vintage. 2005 Louis Latour Meursault-Blagny 1er Château de Blagny Medium-pale yellow. The nose is wide and dense, with deep with a concentrated core of chunky pineapple – you have to wait for quite some time before higher-toned, more floral aspects, eventually peek through. Fresh and ebullient on the tongue, starting narrow and widening on the mid-palate. ‘Just enough’ acidity comes late and there’s a nice extra edge of slightly chalky fruit flavour as you go into the finish. The texture is good and so is the flavour, but there’s far from exciting concentration. I would need a little more acid ‘cut’ before I could describe this as mineral. 2003 Lignier-Michelot, Morey St.Denis Vieilles Vignes Medium-plus colour. The nose is forward, maybe a hint porty and certainly very ripe but generally the fruit talks of pinot. Ripe, plenty of concentration and very well mannered tannin. The understated acidity provides good balance and just enough freshness. It’s riper than I prefer, but if the nose talks of pinot then fruit on the palate clearly says burgundy. A good effort. Rebuy – Maybe

I don’t often buy wines from Maison Latour, and whilst I’ve had so-so bottles from them, it has more been due to lack of local availability than quality reasons. Now I’ve found a relatively close merchant, so two or three bottles might appear over the next days. 2005 Louis Latour, Gevrey-Chambertin Medium-plus colour. The first sniff seems architypal Gevrey; dark fruit against an earthy, almost grainy nose. With open time it becomes higher toned with more red fruit, seems much softer if a little less interesting. Decent concentration and certainly it’s more red-fruited in the mouth. Good acidity and late appearing tannin with a little grain. Not the glossy fruit and concentration of many 2005 Gevreys, but at a decent price this is worth buying. [....]

2005 Olivier Guyot, Marsannay La Montagne Medium, medium-plus cherry-red colour. Modest higher tones over a tight core of dark fruit, swirling releases a little more spicy, leathery notes. Rather linear but very good fine tannin and slightly forward acidity. The flavour is mainly confined to the mid-palate and finish, but it’s quite intense if slightly metallic tasting, the finish is today average. This gives the impression that it has already tightened for slumber. There’s not that much to see today, I would leave for 5 or 6 years. Rebuy – Maybe
