la gibryotte 2006 gevrey-chambertin

The 2006 Nuits from the other night was so good, I thought I might try another 06. Claude Dugat has quite a following, and prices to match. ‘The kids’ of Claude have a small négoce operation and this label is part of that. Not for a second would I describe this wine as cheap, but it is half the price of Claude’s villages Gevrey-Chambertin – yet it is really excellent!

2006 La Gibryotte, Gevrey-Chambertin
Medium, medium-plus colour. The first sniff is lactic, but it hangs around only long enough for that one impression – afterwards there is fresh blue-black fruit and just a hint of pencil-lead-style minerality – aromatically it’s flexing lean but powerful muscles. Wide, fresh and with a baseline of slightly dry but very fine tannin. The intensity is just lovely for a villages – particularly due to the fresh way it’s delivered. Again it’s dark, almost bordering on blue fruit and it’s clearly sweet (ripe) fruit, but never for a second is it disappointingly so, as it’s delivered with such ‘fresh’ gusto. The finishing notes reflect that more mineral element of the nose. I think this excellent – I will have to buy a few more while I can – i.e. before you read this 😉
Rebuy – Yes

I keep wondering why so many people have panned the 06 when I keep enjoying nice samples from Hudelot-Noellat and Groffier among others. Pleasantly piquant from village to 1er cru.

Well bmcq, I always rated this a a very, very good vintage in the Côte de Nuits – close to as good as anything for a generation in the area of Nuits/Vosne – if you can turn a blind eye to 2005!

Fair to say the Côte de Beaune is much more patchy, and many people are getting their pants in a bunch over 06 Volnay and GMT – but I haven’t yet experienced it, and have no plans to start pulling my own bottles, mainly because it is too much hard work judging by where those cases lie!

Yes, M. Nanson, but regarding 06 you’ve been a bit of an anomaly in heralding it’s virtues.
I do believe that the density of wineinfo does seem to lead to a distinct increae in bunched knickers.

As for crowded cellars, I admit the same difficulties and find myself like a miner turning the earth of boxes in search of imagined nuggets.

I think part of the reason why 2006 is underrated ist that the prices were so low after the financial crisis. It seems to be a selfullfilling prophecy on the market: If a wine is expensive, its getting more expensive, a pricewothy wine is underrated most of the times. I bought a lot of 2006 anyway. Seems to me the best bargain from this decade (Maybe including 2001)

Sagacious observation J:Bingo. I like 2001 too. That was the last time I could buy the Roumier villages without teeth grinding. It’s also my son’s birth year so I’ve socked away a case of my last purchase of the Vogue 1er for him.
