Vosne-Romanée

2007 Eugénie Vosne-Romanée

Medium-plus colour. I have an impression of a little coffee at the centre of this wine’s aromas, but mainly this is a clean and almost 2006-style of Vosne with a textured depth to the aromas, edged with a little dark minerals – very fine. Across the tongue there’s nothing of the facile sweetness that some 2007s display, but there is a little of that borderline lack of ripeness that some other producer’s wines show – in this case it is on a really low level and adds an interesting element. There’s no denying the extra dimension of flavour it the end of the mid-palate. An excellent 2007 indeed.

Classic spice-bread on the nose. Clearly there is quite some extraction here, evidenced by that modern rarity – real tannin! Good underlying acidity and plenty of flavour too. This is a wine of real character; the tannins are forward but without astringency and the fruit flavour is equally boisterous. I like it.

A beautiful aroma rises from the glass; there is a little spice but it bubbles below with red berries and violets – lovely. The palate is becoming tight, but it retains just enough generosity that there is balance. It’s a little mineral in the long finish. Very good, but either just sniff or be prepared to wait a few years.

Round, the nose is quite ripe and spicy. In the mouth there’s good freshness for the vintage – strong flavour in the finish too. It’s a bit loose in the middle today but I admire some of the parts.

Fruit for this wine was blended from five parcels. Darker fruit with an obvious spicy Vosne context plus a little oak. This is fuller, rounder and more supple than the Bourgogne, extra intensity too of darker fruit – some licorice and hints of cedar. Good wine!

Medium, medium-plus colour. The nose is still interesting, if with a slightly heavy emphasis on coconut-oak but a nice acid-red fruit bubbles below. In the mouth this is slightly narrower and sharper than its youth but despite a little coconut flavour there’s good acidity and a nice dimension of fresh finishing flavour with fine length. Half the bottle was left overnight in the fridge. Next day the aromas are more interesting; the coconut is gone and it’s replaced with a little ginger-cake. In the mouth the wine also seems rounder and again no coconut – less narrow, more generous. I’d definitely rebuy this based on the day two performance, as for day one, I’m not the greatest fan of coconut!

Dark fruit aromas mix with a little spiced bread. Not totally sweet (good!) there is a depth of texture, tannin too. Nicely structured not an entirely simple 2009.

Medium mature, slightly mahogany colour. A little warmth of sweet undergrowth and a subliminal suggestion of Vosne spice, the last drops have a pretty acid red-cherry note. In the mouth this is sweetly fruited and has excellent balancing acidity. Medium concentrated with fully resolved tannin. The finish is freshly and understatedly sweet. More than ‘competent’ but not significantly more, there’s no wow factor. Tasty if a little simple…

Has a decent, dark colour. The nose is dark-fruit shaded and shows the village spicyness. In the mouth it has lost the fat and impact of it’s youth – it’s narrower and more taught. There is certainly some development of mid-palate complexity and a decent length. To drink today it’s quite okay, but reward is at least 7 or 8 years away.
