Clos de la Roche

2017 Georges Lignier Clos de la Roche

A fresh, airy, nose with nice fruit, not a nose of impact but one of beautiful complexity. Fresh, direct, layered on the palate – ooh, really concentrated, layered finishing – this is a great wine for a 2017!

In bottle one month. Hmm, this has a lovely nose – fine floral perfume and depth. Nice in the mouth, there’s drive and complexity here. Holding a good, partly mineral finish. Not full amplitude, but everything that’s visible is delicious. Excellent!

Bottled a month. Hmm, a nice, open, freshness here, just a little perfumed and saline. Depth of flavour, intensity, depth to the texture too. Both mineral and a little structural. Faint oak on the finish. Really lots to look forward to.

One month in bottle. Not such a wide nose but one of depth with a certain salinity above – slowly releasing some attractive fruit too. Vibrant, complex, delicious wine – ooh – such an up-front performance. A little oak in the finish, but only a little. Really excellent!

2017 Castagnier Guy Clos de la Roche

Hmm – wide, darkly oaked but with quite an aromatic invitation. Mouth-filling. Big wine. Only slowly melting its complexity over the palate. Serious, impressive, and with lots of power for the vintage – delicious and it will last as long as you wish – bravo!

In bottle 1 week. The nose hasnt yet revovered from bottling, but working the glass brings ever-more purity. Ooh – thats good a wine, one of line, not too much intensity but such a fine and complex ‘presence’ – really super. Excellent wine.

One week in bottle. The nose is already beautifully in place. Mouth-filling, fresh, highly energetic and complex – Ooh delicious too. Really layered in the finish – lots of flavour to give. Excellent wone!

2017 Magnien Frederic Clos de la Roche

An open nose, some spice, modest of impact. The first impression is also modest, but this is a wine that opens ever-wider on the palate. A touch of tannin and good complexity. I’ve said it twice already but this is quite a modest wine, but it’s also a very tasty one!

1985 Remy Louis Clos de la Roche

Ten minutes are needed for the nose to open, but when it does…
Stunning, sweet-inflected red blood, faint smoke and precise layers of fruit – glorious stuff. The palate is very fine, showing ripe fruit and nice acidity – just a little minerality too. I still expect more oomph from a Grand Cru – the intensity and concentration is more that of a villages – churlish to complain (perhaps) as this is both complex and compelling. Just beautiful wine. This time around, none was left to oxidise overnight!
