Gevrey-Chambertin

2006 Château de Marsannay Gevrey-Chambertin

Medium, medium-plus colour. The nose begins with deep but narrow aromas with a little mint-leaf and occasional but very pretty flowers and cream. There seems not too much tightening of flavour yet – there’s still a little rasp of tannin and a reasonable width of flavour too. Good acidity, which helps further expand the flavours in the mid-palate, which also shows a nice floral aspect. A more than adequate wine for the label!

Medium, medium-plus colour. The nose and indeed the flavours show some reduction so I made a quick double-decant, within 10 minutes all was fixed. Not so obviously Gevrey, but there’s nice red cherry with some darker fruit and savoury hints – eventually a lovely redcurrant impression. Balanced acidity and decent depth of flavour. There is some tannin that’s accented with a faint astringency and a decent length. It’s tasty, so if you get a good price it’s worth buying, but their 06 Morey VV is on a higher level.

Medium-plus colour. Slightly murky nose with a little vanilla and a faint mushroom – slowly fills out with deep and impressive primary red/black fruit to compliment the vanilla and eventually a little brioche. Some fat and plenty of mid-palate dimension. Balanced and long. This was both friendly and at the same time not a hint facile – I liked it very much

Medium colour. A little dark oak and sweet cherry width. Ripe and well structured though it seems a little simple before the good finish.

Medium, medium-plus colour. The nose is a little mineral, but quite tight. Fresh, with pretty fruit and understated structure. The length is almost good. A fine 2006.

Medium-pale colour. Wide and high-toned aromas that are a little diffuse cover a tighter core of fruit. Whilst this is rather elegant, there is a beautiful depth to the fruit – a clear ‘buy’ despite the 69 franc tariff – long finishing and lovely.

Some lovely dark red fruits on the nose. The palate is wide and interesting and packed with very fine tannin. This is quite long and a very good villages Gevrey
