Remoriquet Henri & Gilles

1999 Remoriquet Henri & Gilles Vosne-Romanée Aux Dessus des Malconsorts

Medium, medium-plus ruby-red colour. The nose slowly opens over about 25 minutes, hints of spice, warm dark fruit and a slightly strange mineral/coal note. Over the tongue, it’s balanced and quite intense, some grain still from the tannin, but that strange aroma is also their as a flavour too. Previous bottles were fine so perhaps this strange flavour is a one-off – it was anyway more of a background note on day two.

Medium-pale colour. High toned, slightly diffuse aromas. A good, honest mouthful of wine with nice tannin/acid balance. Perhaps a hint of bitterness in the finish but incredibly nice at €9 to take away…

2007 Remoriquet Henri & Gilles Nuits St.Georges Les Allots

By on March 31, 2009 #asides

Medium colour. Bright red fruits and nice depth – a very pretty nose. The impressive flavour belies the colour, very nice mouthwatering acidity, faint astringency and a fading, vanilla edged finsih – this is very nice villages.

Medium, medium-plus colour. The nose is bright with polished, slightly darker fruit – wide but perhaps less deep than the ‘Allots’. More intensity, more tannin and more flavour. Harder to drink now, but this is a very good wine.

Slightly jammy and spicy nose that only gradually fills the glass. Sweeter fruit than the Nuits, very complex if less intense. Seems much longer finishing though. Very pretty indeed.

2003 Remoriquet Henri & Gilles Nuits St.Georges Les Bousselots

A deep and impressively young colour – still some purple when many from the vintage are already browning! Very tight but nice fresh fruit aromas. A mouthful of width and plenty of tannin. The fruit is ripe though not obviously from 2003. I’m very impressed by this.

1998 Remoriquet Henri & Gilles Nuits St.Georges Les St.Georges

By on October 31, 2007 #asides

Medium-plus ruby/mahogany colour. The nose is heavily scented; deep, dense and dank, with wet wood and aged vanilla-cream cherry. Concentrated and rather well textured for a top Nuits from a vintage that enjoys more than a hint of tannin – there’s very little astringency. The acidity remains fresh and mouthwatering though with just a little bitterness at the end. The length is very-good rather than great. Overall, this is impressively open for what is a relative youngster though it’s certainly brawny rather than elegant – but isn’t that the epitomy of a good Nuits? Oh and at ~£20 in the sale – a schnäpchien! For drinking now and over the next 10+ years.

1998 Remoriquet Henri & Gilles Nuits St.Georges Les Damodes

The colour is very deep and surprisingly still clings to a young, faint cherry-red hue. The nose is brooding, dense and very focused – eventually a little underbrush compliments the black-skinned fruit. Concentrated, slightly metallic flavours and plenty of well covered fine tannin are the first impressions followed by faintly mouth-watering acidity and a long, fresh finish. This wine impresses with its very fresh, linear and concentrated yet still quite primary delivery – it is quite aloof – haughty even – but there are no hard edges. I would say it will benefit from at least another 3 years in the cellar.

Medium-plus colour – only the faintest traces of cherry-red still remain. The nose is absolutely splendid; forward, very wide, mineral, a little feral, hints of coffee, spice and spruce – it could only come from Vosne, and though it misses a touch of decorum, such is the complexity that you would expect (blind) that it was a very good grand cru. The bar is now set and I’m judging this wine to grand cru standards: The palate starts with a blast, wide interesting and complex – there’s little fat. It slowly fades rather than expands. Under their blanket of fruit the tannins are a little grainy and the finish is in the ‘good but great’ category. This is an excellent 1er cru but misses a little mid-palate density and length for a truly fine grand cru. All the same, this is open for business and is a very ‘giving’ wine that brims with complexity and interest – if not elegance. Highly recommended…
