2006 Gouges Henri Nuits St.Georges

Medium. Medium-plus colour. The nose is quite spicy. Ripe, with good width and tannin that only shows itself later and with a hint of astringency. This is quite nice.

Medium-plus colour. The nose has width despite a tight but silky impression – slowly opens up to show darker notes and a hint of spice. Mouth-filling, again with a little spicy impression. Plenty of tannin and very good acidity. A little more licorice flavour. This clearly needs plenty of time, but it’s very nice!

1998 Gouges Henri Nuits St.Georges Les Vaucrains

This is a step-up from Gouges’ villages Nuits. Darker in colour with with blacker fruit on the nose. Good intensity and length, again very smooth tannins. Fresh and pretty interesting. This is a nice wine.

Medium cherry-red. The nose starts a little subdued, but given time there’s a high toned sweet note – almost blueberry – eventually a little spice too. Initially the palate starts a little disappointing and thin, though the tannins are smooth and the acidity’s good. Given 90 minutes the palate fattens up some. There’s a nice purity to the fruit though the medium finish never loses a slight bitter aspect. If I hadn’t given this some time to open up I’d have to say this pales next to the following wine, but it’s well balanced so I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt.

Medium-pale ruby, just a little paler at the rim. The nose is dominated by toasty oak- after 25 minutes just a little red fruit starts to come through. Certainly not a blockbuster style, but lovely persistent fruit on the palate and finish with tannins which only show on the finish. Lovely balance to this wine – should age very well. Lovely wine with at least 10 years ahead of it.

1998 Gouges Henri Nuits St.Georges Les Pruliers

By on February 28, 2003 #asides

Medium-full cherry colour, still with purple hints. Nose starts with toasty oak which quickly blows off to reveal faint spice and earthy notes set against a background of high toned black cherry. This wine is quite fat with grainy tannins and long, fresh acidity. The predominantly cherry fruit is also nicely persistent and has good depth, though shows no complexity at this stage. This is a very good wine.
