2013 de Montille Puligny-Montrachet Les Chalumaux

By billn on October 27, 2020

That’s big nose – forward, round, ripe fruit at the core – slightly softer and of course, with a little creamy aromatic development. Wide, mineral, a fine if with a slight richness of texture – practically a little caramel in what is otherwise a clarity of flavour. Chalumaux

Pale bright cherry red, with a broad paler rim showing pinkish still. Bright but slight, spicy cherry, nose. Fresh youthful and rustic, it makes me think of rolling in hay. Mouth entry is pure and sweet, but very small. Nice flavours – very fresh red fruit and spicy, bubblegummy, earth. The mid-palate shows good acidity and grip but no real size, and then it ends. Not quite clipped, but certainly short, though in a way that leaves you wanting more, rather than dissatisfied. Not a serious wine, but just the ticket for a picnic or a roll in the hay.

2005 de Montille Beaune Les Aigrots

Medium-pale yellow. Lot’s of high-toned, sherbet notes over stony fruit and occasional hints of brioche. Good freshness, and not too much of the plump fat you often get in white Beaune. Actually there seems a slight family resemblance to the domaine’s Puligny – though clearly the considerable depth of flavour in the mid-palate lack’s for the Puligny’s fineness. I’d like a little more focus on the nose, but there’s no doubting how tasty it is.

2005 de Montille Beaune Les Perrières

Medium colour with hints of purple. The nose starts wide, high-toned and with a rather candied fruit – quite interesting – and particularly so as it starts to develop a distinct creamy edge that’s not totally obviously from the barrel. In the mouth it is lithe and beautifully detailed – again with a creamy tinge that expands in the long finish – actually one phase during the evening shows this aspect just a little too much, but it slowly subsides to a more considered level. There is a lovely core of acidity with the ripe fruit, precise on the nose and in your mouth. A beauty whose star shines, wanes then shines again over about 3 hours that it lasted.

2006 de Montille Volnay Mitans

Medium colour. Red fruit dominates the nose – jam tarts. Good texture and plenty of tannin that’s balanced by the cream-edged fruit. The acidity helps to push the finish quite long. Very nice

a shade darker than the Mitans and with high-toned aromatics. The tannin has a little more grain and the fruit is quite linear until it reaches the finish where it finally amplifies and widens.

2002 de Montille Volnay Carelles Sous la Chapelle

Medium-pale colour. Herbs, minerals and certainly more earthy aromas. Very fine tannins and staining flavours – also some minerality here. Very, very nice!

1997 de Montille Volnay Mitans

Its a deep, young colour in the glass. Aromatically not much to say – very tight. The palate is far more expressive; lovely texture, fine tannins and understatedly long. The acidity is relaively low but there is also a good balance – I’d rather have this than ill-judged acidification. Good wine.

1997 de Montille Pommard Les Rugiens

(Magnum) A lovely soft and sweet red fruit nose – still quite primary. Plenty of decent tannin and lots of dimension on the palate. This is young but in the context of the vintage, excellent – the pick of these Pommards.
